Homemade Tahini Paste Recipe

Tahini is an essential ingredient of hummus. I have been making home made hummus for years now, but used to buy tahini, always moaning how expensive it was. But you can’t really make hummus without it. So, tough luck, as some people may say., I had to buy it. Until I’ve decided enough is enough. Making tahini cannot be that hard, right? And believe me, it isn’t. I really don’t know why I thought it involved some kind of a higher level of skills. It’s as simple as making peanut butter. And that’s SIMPLE πŸ™‚

So, here’s what you need:

  • 1 cup of sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil (rapeseed oil is best for this recipe)

And here’s what to do:

  1. Put sesame seeds on a dry pan and roast it stirring constantly. Make sure not to burn them or your tahini will be a tad bitter. I take them off the heat the moment they turn golden and start to release fragrant
  2. Transfer warm roasted sesame seeds into a blender and pulse several times. Then blend on a high speed for 5-7 minutes, turning your blender off from time to time so it doesn’t overheat. Add oil to help with blending and, once you’re satisfied with the consistency, transfer to a jar.
  3. Done πŸ™‚
